Best beach for body surfing/boogie boarding and sunbathing?

We%26#39;re a family of 4 (kids 12 %26amp; 14) looking for a place to vacation this August. We want to rent a condo or house on the beach and have been looking at Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, OBX, Cape Cod, you name it...we%26#39;ve looked at it. Right now I don%26#39;t know where to go.

Here%26#39;s what we want to do:

Hang on the beach and be able to body surf/boogie board

Eat at great seafood restaurants at night

Play some mini-golf; ride go-karts at night

Have some other options in case it rains during the day

Which beach meets our needs the best? Does Wrightsville have decent waves?

We%26#39;re long time vacationers in Ocean City, MD and just can%26#39;t take the crowds and run-down accomodations anymore...

Help...please!!!

Best beach for body surfing/boogie boarding and sunbathing?

wrightsville beach is the surf capital of the east coast.. beautiful beach, clean water, great seafood restaurants.. less than 10 minutes away is jungle rapids.. game rooms, go-karts, mini-golf and a water park... their is good shopping all around.. especially @ mayfaire towncenter with a 16 screen movie theater and a bevvy of restaurants there too.. wrightsville beach is not over built and has wonderful accomodations.. for a family of 4 you can%26#39;t beat the harbor inn for value, location, and view.. there is also the battleship north carolina and the nc aquarium to explore nearby.. the blue water grill is one of my favs for seafood and cocktails.. hope this helps.

It helps a lot! Wrightsville Beach seems like the perfect place to try...I%26#39;ve also read on other posts that they have some restaurants with killer crab cakes (which is one the draws of Maryland!!!)

We are in the process of booking a condo in the Wrightsville Dunes complex. It seems to be in a pretty remote area of Wrightsville Beach (not as built up) but still within driving distance to some good restaurants. Do you have any information about that area or the complex?

Also, what is the weather like in mid-August?

wrightsville beach is a cozy community so your less than 8 minutes to anywhere you want to go.. for crab cakes I suggest the oceanic restaurant.. it is about 2.5 miles from the dunes condos.. its a straight shot down lumina st. they have excellent seafood, it is ocean front and very nice.. the dunes is on the north end of the island, but nothing is far away here.. the weather in mid-august will be in the 90%26#39;s but you are surrounded by water with great ocean breezes.. so just take a dip in the water to cool off, the oceans water is perfect then.. warm and refreshing at the same time.. the island is normally at full capacity then too, so great people watching... if you like seafood you will not be disappointed.. almost all the restaurant at wb specialize in seafood and there are plenty of them.. don%26#39;t overpack!!! this is a shorts and flip-flop town.. no need to dress up even at the nicest of restaurants.. I normally wear khaki shorts, polo shirt and flip-flops, or a t-shirt.. it is that casual and relaxed here.. you will also find that the ocean is very clean and quite clear here.. hope this helps and have a great time..

restaurants i love at wrightsville beach.. blue water grill(great habor views of the yachts and draw bridge, hip crowd, best clam strips I have ever had.).. oceanic.. (ocean front, nice wood pier, great seafood and the crab cakes are the best i have ever had, and beautiful decor).. south beach grill.. (good burgers and wraps, they also have fried pickle chips!! these are excllent and a southern specialty and they do it better than anybody. a must try!!) rafaella%26#39;s.. (the best italian in town, they also have excellent seafood.. they know how to do excellent calamari.. the trolley stop.. (hot dog heaven).. for breakfast, the best and only choice for locals is the causeway cafe!! (everything and anything you want for breakfast they have.. huge menu and all is wonderful)... savannah%26#39;s (low-country gourmet.. best chef in wb.. very creative menu.. fine dining) tower 7...(great beach location.. I LOVE their fish tacos).. verandas at the holiday inn sunspree resort.. (I will only go their for sunday brunch!!! excellent selection and the shrimp is awesome!!!) I hope this helps at getting a start for dining options.. these are all LOCALLY owned and not chain restaurants.. I frequent these places often and they never disappoint..

Wow! Thank you so much! There are quite a few good dining options! We might not ever cook a dinner in the condo (fine by me)! Thanks for taking the time to give such valuable info!

We have vacationed on Wrightsville beach for the last 3 years (and again this year). We go the 2nd week of August. The first year the weather was ok. We had 3 rainy days and the temp was in the low 80%26#39;s. The rest of that week was about mid 80%26#39;s - great surf weather.the surf was great.

Our second year it only rained at night. It was 85-95 all week. That year the ocean was very calm. No waves. We found lots of sand dollars and cool shells though.

Last year was hot Mid 90%26#39;s all week. The waves were nice and high.

You should have great weather and surf. If not Wilmingtin NC - 10 minutes away has everything. Movie theater, mall, food...

Someone mentioned Jungle Rapids. You and your kids will love it.

As soon as we arrive we head right over to the Blue Water Grill - We love it.

We just returned from a week vacation in Wrightsville. It was our first time and we can%26#39;t wait to go back! The beach was beautiful, the people were great and the food was on point every time. We loved both Oceanic and Blue Water Grill (think it%26#39;s the same owners). For breakfast we went to Causeway Cafe which had a diner feel ~ food and prices were great. Texas Roadhouse, if you venture into Wilmington, was a good time, and the ribs were delicious. Consider renting bikes while you%26#39;re there; it%26#39;s a great way to get around the island and you can get a basket to put all your beach stuff in. Be sure to visit Johnny Mercer%26#39;s Pier. Oh, and you won%26#39;t regret getting up early to catch the sunrise. Enjoy your vacation :]
