What to do?

This will be our family%26#39;s first trip to OBX in early June with our 9-year old and 6-year old. We will be staying in Avon. Suggestions for things to do? eat? shop?

What to do?

Go to the beach and play, relax, fish, etc; Bodie Island lighthouse is a little to the north and Hatteras Light is 15 minutes south. I like the Dolphin%26#39;s Den in Avon but the Fish House is 20 minutes or so south and it has great food at alot better price. Can%26#39;t help you with shopping. Have a good trip

What to do?

Here%26#39;s a list of things to do or see: The aquarium in Mnateo, the Roanoke Island Festival Park (ship, museum and interactive encampment), Big Al%26#39;s Restaurant (it%26#39;s decorated in everything Coke-a-Cola). We%26#39;ve enjoyed pontoon boat and jet ski rentals (which can be found everywhere), putt-putt golf, walking out on the fishing piers, charter fishing, climbing Jockey%26#39;s Ridge sand dune and watching the hang gliding lessons or bring your own kite, visiting the Wright Brothers National Park and climbing up to the monument, dolphin watching tours, airboat rides, airplane tour of the Northern beaches, movies, bowling, climbing lighthouses and go-cart racing. We usually cook most of our meals at the house. The only places we%26#39;ve eaten are in Nags Head: Millers Oceanfront, Sooey%26#39;s Ribs and ice cream at Kill Devils. Most of our shopping is also done in the Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head areas.

If you are up early, go down the road to Buxton to the Orange Blossom Bakery. Can%26#39;t beat their apple uglies.

The last poster had a lot of good ideas, but many of them are quite far from Avon (up north) and will take pretty much a whole day trip to do anything up there. Going to Kitty Hawk to see the Wright Bros and the hang gliders is a good thing to do on your way to Hatteras or on your way out, assuming you are driving in the north end. Also true for the things on Manteo.

There are several good restaurants in Avon, and miniature golf, and the fishing pier.

There are kids activities through the National Park Service, website says schedule for summer will be up by the end of March.

If you%26#39;re up for a day trip away from the crowd in Nags Head, take a drive south and catch the ferry over to Ocracoke Island. Rent bikes and enjoy exploring the quaint village and lovely little harbor at Silver Lake. Lots of good lunch spots with fresh seafood and ice cream stops too! Lots of shops.Catch the ferry back in time for the sunset. Great day and you%26#39;ll get a totally different vibe than the rest of OBX

You must tak them crabbing. It is so much fun. All you need is a chicken drumstick and tie it to a string - hang it in the water and gently pull it up and the crabs will be hanging off the drumstick. It%26#39;s so cool. Just ask the locals where to go. The kids loved it (who am I kidding - I think I was more thrilled than the kids).
