Making our first trip to Corolla the second week of July. Is the water temperature comfortable for swimming? How is the surf? is it safe for children?

The water temp will be great, very comfortable for swimming.
The surf is variable and can be very dangerous. Pay attention to the red flags and please educate yourself about rip currents. No matter how well you can swim in a pool, the ocean is different. There also can be sudden drop offs. Never turn your back on the ocean or the children. I have included a link to rip current awareness-please read.
Not trying to scare you, we vacation several times a year in for over 15 years, never had trouble but have seen people get caught in rips (myself included). I guess we all tend to get in a vacation mode, and let our guards down.
