If your planning at trip to Ocracoke between now and march you might want to consider taking the ferries from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island as getting there from Hatteras will require using 4 wheel drive as well as the knowledge of driving on the sand, they are replacing the bridges on the Island between the town and the ferry docks at the north end and the detour will take you out on the beach .
You can get updates here as the ferry schedules have changed too.

Getting to Ocracoke this winter 2008Having made the trip from the Hatteras end once a few weeks ago I can attest to the fact that the sand is very churned up, soft and full of deep ruts. If they get some wind and rain it will get better. It is certainly passable, I did not have a problem but the on-site tow truck has already puuled out over 50 vehicles.
