Another first timer coming with questions

We are planning to go to Nags Head the last week of Aug. is it still summer crowds at this time? Is the weather hot durung the day and warm at night? Is the water warm enough to swim? Is the fishing good at this time and what is in season to catch? Is Nags Head beaches dog freindly? What is a good area to rent that is ';on'; the beach ocean side (looking at houses)?

Well, I can help with a few questions.

Crowds tend to thin out a little by this time because many schools are back in session. The temp. can be extremely hot and humid this time of year and still warm at night. This is also the middle of hurricane season, so you never can tell with the weather.

The water will be perfect for swimming.

Here is a link for dogs on the beach:

There are houses all up and down the beach. So to narrow it down, is there another variable that is important to you?

I have found the beaches in Nags Head to be very dog friendly. I walk my dog on the beach almost every morning, and never have an issue. If you go early in the morning, or late in the day after the beach crowd has left, you shouldn%26#39;t have a problem. Make sure your dogs aren%26#39;t bothering people, and going crazy, etc and you should be fine. Make sure you always have a leash with you (if you let your dog run), and please do pick up after them. There are pet clean-up bags loacted at most beach access points. Great to see you%26#39;re bringing the dog-they love a beach vacation, too!!

Thats one of the best things about Nags Head, there never are really any crowds on the beaches. Dogs are fine as long as you have a leash. In some of the more open areas such as corolla and farther south near orgen inlet, there could be as much as a football field between you and the closest people on the beach, here you probably do not need a leash. As far as fishing goes, check out either (or both) the Avalon fishing pier, or Nags head fishing pier. Talk to the cashier about whats being caught and what they recommend for bait. They want you to catch fish as much as you do. The way Nags Head (or the Outer Banks) is set up is, from North to South- Corolla, Duck,Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills,Nags Head, and if you keep going, Cape Hatteras. The drive down the whole coast from Corolla to Cape Hatteras is about 2 1/2 hours. Nags Head is pretty much in the center and most populated (expensive). However some of the biggest houses you will ever see are up in Corolla and Duck. You wont have any problem with water temp for swimming- even at night. If you%26#39;re renting a house, most realty companies offer pet friendly options, plus many hotels do to. I stayed in southern Nags head last year (milepost 20.5) and the beach was pretty skinny and windy, no problem with my 2 dogs. If your set on August and beach front, the week of the 23rd most rates will be substantially lower than the rest of the summer.

Good luck, Have fun

Thanks,

Just the information I was looking for. We want a house as close to the beach as possible and I think we found one. The dogs are very well behaved and listen well. There are 6 of us going, 4 from GA and us from MA so we will be driving down the coast from Norfolk, VA (flying into VA) Is there anything along the way to Nags Head the we should stop at? We are also interested in chartering a fishing boat (just for 6-8)for off shore, I think it is white marlin season anyone know a good captain?

Now is there any must do%26#39;s!!!

Unless you are planning to eat in with all the fish you might catch....you must eat at JK%26#39;s for melt in your mouth steaks (Bypass Rd Mile Post 9) and Basnight%26#39;s Lone Cedar for excellent seafood (on the Causeway to Manteo).

Must do%26#39;s: Climb Jockey%26#39;s Ridge (though in August it is likely to be very hot and humid; go late afternoon and take lots of water).

Spend some time perusing the shopping areas in Duck.

Otherwise, just RELAX on the beach...sunbathe and take long walks. Look for shells right after sunrise. Don%26#39;t come here if you can%26#39;t step back and relax.

Outer Banks is very laid back. I personally think the beach at Kitty Hawk is the nicest and located close to stores and fun stuff like mini-golf and shopping. The beach at Corolla is nice and the area is less commercial than Nags Head/Kitty Hawk. Head further south to Hatteras and beyond for great fishing and even less commercialism.

August can still be very hot...it was the entire month of August last year. The water will be beautiful and tub-like unless the wind is blowing the wrong way. Virginia schools start the day after Labor Day, so that is when things really quiet down, although Ohio and others start in mid-August. Agree with previous poster about dogs in Nags Head, especially South Nags Head. You are also as close as you can be to Oregon Inlet, which comes in handy if you are fishing and have to be there at 5:30 am! The attached link is the fishing reports, so you can see what they were catching last August. I have only fished on Fight-N-Lady, but never been skunked. Really good cobia fishing with Rick Caton too... he is a great captain...everyone on the beach loves him...but book early! Also check TWstackle.com for daily surf reports. Very slow now. Surf fishing is best in October, but piers are good in August.
