We are from cleveland ohio and are looking to travel the entire length of the outer banks in september. any suggestions on how the best way to do this would be appreciated ( hotels to stay at. length of stay, is this a good time to go, restaurants, etc.). We have the time. Thanks.

For an amazing...although expensive splurge...go to Elizabeth%26#39;s in Duck (Scarborough Faire Shopping Center) Leonard (the owner) is amazing. I%26#39;ve only stayed at one hotel - The Sanderling, just north of Duck and it was lovely.

Good time to go just after the season and still warm enough to swim I would plan a few days in Nags Head you can explore in both directions from their then head to Ocracoke or Buxton for a few more days, take the Cedar Island ferry out of Ocracoke and head to Atlantic Beach for a few more days
If you have 4 Wheel drive that is a plus as you can drive on the beach on Hatteras Island and up north past Duck .
Hotel in Nags Head I would select Surf Side, Ocean view or front rooms good location too from there you can venture north to Corolla see the pones on a tour or again if you have a 4x4 . Corolla light house and Body Island Light house are both see able too from Nags Head. See kitty hawk and the Aquarium in Mateo , fish from a pier or the beach . On the way south to Ocracoke ferry I would stop at the Haul over area watch the wind surfers on the sound side this is just past Avon . Buxton might be a nice stopping place too for a night you can see the Hatteras Light house there . Several hotel to choose from I think there is a comfort inn there I like the Light house view it’s old but well kept
On Ocracoke there are many hotels to pick from best view I would say is the Anchorage inn but most all the hotels are with in walking distance to shopping and food. Howard%26#39;s is a must for dinner or lunch Atlantic cafĂ© is up scale and very good Jason’s is good pizza or sea food Jolly Rodgers is a great place for a sunset dinner a variety of things there I like the Mexican dishes but they have a good variety of other foods
Atlantic Beach be sure to eat at the Sanitary fish Market visit old Buford too just north another aquarium there too just south of the resort area I would head south from there to finish in Wilmington visit the USS north Carolina .
Have Great trip I hope this helps
Here too is a site to look at just for new comers http://fishoinc.tripod.com/
September is still a hurricane season so don%26#39;t forget to buy a travel insurance
I want to thank everyone for being so helpful. I believe that we will try just about everything that was suggested ( keeping in mind the hurricane season-good point) and plan on about a two week vacation just exploring the various areas of the outerbanks, various resturants, and taking the ferries that was suggested. It sounds like a lot of fun.
I would like to repay everyone so.....if you are ever considering cleveland ?????????
Anyway...thanks
fish oinc hit it right on the head. I would follow his itenerary...one thing to do while in the Atlantic area is to take a day trip over the Cape Lookout...unbelievable. I second the Sanitary in Morehead City and be sure to eat at the Fish House in the Buxton/Frisco area. (I stay in either Buxton or Frisco just about every year but can%26#39;t remember which village the Fish House is in.)
Have a great trip.
We have been to both parts of the Outer Banks - the northern part and southern part, but we did them on two separate vacations both times in August. Lots to do and see so I would definately figure on at least 2 to 3 weeks if you plan to visit both ends of the Outer Banks. Don%26#39;t miss seeing all the lighthouses...there are five of them and they are all unique and beautiful! Each one has a visitors center with them and a couple of them you can actually climb (though we did not because it was quite hot when we were there in August). If you go to the Southern Outer Banks (Atlantic Beach area) make sure you visit Fort Macon State Park (both the fort and the public beach there are wonderful), Beaufort (has beautiful old houses!), and take the ferries to both Shackleford Banks and to visit Cape Lookout Lighthouse. We found a TON of shells on Shackleford Banks....it was unbelieveable and so much fun. When you take the ferry rides you also will see the Wild Horses. Atlantic Beach is alot less crowded than the northern Outer Banks.. but both areas are wonderful. You will have a great time!
