We were thinking of flying into Charlotte and then driving to a nice small town that has beauty, interesting restaurants and shopping. Can anyone suggest such a place? We would like to hopefully stay within an hour of Charlotte, but for something special would be willing to drive a little farther. Is Ashville to far of a drive and is it a pretty drive in March? Thanks so much!

Salisbury is 45 miles away...very historical, civil war cemetery, nice downtown.
I suggest Blowing Rock, NC. About an hour and a half. It has all the things you are looking for. Check out their website. best wishes. Another good option would be Hendersonville, NC.
Thank you all for your input....we will definately pick between those mentioned!
I vote for Blowing Rock or Asheville.
I agree with Bud. He gave us wonderful advice last summer. We had a great time staying in Blowing Rock. It is such a charming town. We stayed at The Sweet Seasons B%26amp;B. If you are looking for a romantic place to stay.....then I highly recommend Sweet Seasons. The cottage is private and has a stream running thru the front yard, and the gourmet breakfast was great! The downtown area has interesting restaurants and pubs and the shopping is great. We are from Maine and Bar Harbor is considered our charming town, for me Blowing Rock was like Bar Harbor, only instead of having an ocean view, it had a beautiful view of the mountains.
Traffic in Hendersonville is getting worse and worse. Only one nice thing in Hendersonville, IMHO, is a historic Main Street. Blowing Rock is still a small charming town and hopefully it is planning to stay the way it is.

The Charlotte Airport is on the Blowing Rock side of Charlotte. It is exactly 2 hours to the heart of Blowing Rock.
An easy drive through Hickory and Lenior.
We LOVE it! Many nice places to stay, a wide variety of restaurants and the scenery is beautiful.
Spend alot of time there. If you decide on Blowing Rock, will be happy to make suggestions.
Just to reply that there%26#39;s only one nice thing in H%26#39;Ville - I%26#39;d disagree. The Carl Sandburg Estate is in Flat Rock, the Flat Rock Playhouse is excellent, you are about 30 minutes from waterfall country and Chimney Rock State Park and Asheville.There%26#39;s good golfing. If you are there in the fall, many of the orchards are open for the public. There are quite a few great festivals in H%26#39;Ville. Now, I do agree Blowing Rock is a great place...but I like H%26#39;ville equally as well.
Bud, I respect your opinion and your contribution on this board but please reread my post. First I said, IMHO. Second I wrote IN Hendersonville. I didn%26#39;t say in Breavrd, Flat Rock, Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Forest, Asheville. I only made a statement about Hendersonville.
