First Timers

There will be 6 in our group going for the first time to OBX the last week in Aug, renting a house in Nags Head, any must do%26#39;s? 2 of us are on the water all the time so we know what sitting on the beach and just relaxing is. We are also looking to do a fishing charter 4-6 people, any one captain/boat stand out from the rest? Two of us just went to HI in Oct and caught a big ZERO! Is white marlin running at that time of the year?

I would like also any info on driving on the beach. Do you need a pass? Do you need things in the SUV like tire gauge, shovel etc?

First Timers

You can do a search on this forum for Outer Banks and get info, as well as a couple of other websites. Try obxconnection.com and fishoinc.tripod.com. There is lots of obx info on both of these sites. We will be going for the first time this summer, as well. I%26#39;ve had lots of help from the obxconnection website. Hope this helps.

There is a lot to do, depending on your interests There is evrything from golf, bowling, and the usual beach attractions to the aquarium in Manteo, Elizabethan Gardens, lighthouses, Wright Bros Memorial, and driving up north to the Corolla/Carova area to see the wild horses. There%26#39;s tons to do here!

As far as fishing, late August can be a great time for white marlin. You can charter a boat at Pirates Cove or Oregon Inlet, but it%26#39;s a very expensive day. Keep in mind the boat will be about $1500.00 for the day (this is for offshore for marlin, etc.), and then a good tip for the mate will put you at about $1800.00. The boats do take up to 6 people, but it%26#39;s still about $300.00 each without food and fish cleaning expense. There are several good inshore boats, too. Much less expensive, and they will also be good for 1/2 day trips. No marlin on these boats, but still some good fishing in the sound and near shore waters. Sorry about the bad luck in HI, but that%26#39;s why we call it fishing, and not catching. You could very easily go out with a charter boat, and a good captain, and catch nothing-no guaratees when fishing!

As far as beach driving: the only places you will be able to drive then are at the inlet, and up north in the 4 wheel drive areas. Must have 4 wheel drive with good clearance. Let air out to 15 lbs, and do bring a tire guage and a shovel. Be careful as the sand can be very soft, and deep at the inlet. Also, watch the tide chartes-do not get stuck with water coming in-not good-I have seen people lose their vehicles. Not trying to scare anyone, but use common sense, and you%26#39;ll be fine. If you drive on the beach at the inlet area, there is air back at the fishing center just across the road.

Have a great trip, and let me know if you want more fishing info as far as boats/captains, etc.
